FILM HISTORY AS A LIST AWARDS 2011 – BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: CHRISTIAN BALE (THE FIGHTER)

A very tight category this one with Bale edging Rush by a solitary point. Rush appeared on everyone’s list but only garnered one first place whilst Bale topped two votes and came second in a third. Christian Bale first made his name as a youngster in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun and has since gone on to impress in films such as American Psycho, The Mechanic and Christopher Nolan’s Batman films. His ability to physically transform himself into his characters rivals that of Robert De Niro and Daniel Day Lewis with the actor famously losing over a third of his natural body weight to play the insomniac suffering protagonist in The Mechanic. He can be hit and miss as a leading man but The Fighter shows that when he is on form he is one of the most compelling and versatile actors in the world.
