Extremely close this one as Fincher edges Nolan to claim Best Director and give The Social Network its third FHL award. The points between the two filmmakers were actually tied but Fincher appeared higher on 3 of the 5 voters lists. (Laurent, Brek, Daniel). So in spite of not actually placing first on any board members list, Fincher’s overall high consistency sees him win this award. Nolan and Aronofsky topped voters lists twice in this category but both men failed to make everyone’s list and this ultimately let them down.
On then to the winner. David Fincher was a music video director who received harsh treatment for his debut picture Alien 3 – a perfectly solid addition to the franchise which had the daunting task of trying to live up to the first two installments. His next film however silenced all doubters as Se7en proved to be a morally compelling, stunningly filmed psychological horror film with the action of a tense thriller and the heart of a convincing drama. He followed this up with The Game, an interesting premise which divided critics and then became the talk of the town again with his intelligently post-modern and thrilling but odd drama Fight Club with Edward Norton in the lead role. He followed this up with Panic Room and then arguably the worst film of his career – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which was ironically the first time he became nominated for an Oscar. Fincher helps to make Social Network an impeccably controlled and visually impressive film which on paper seemed very much a tv drama concept. A thrilling tv drama but tv drama all the same. A man with the talents of Fincher however knows how to make anything cinematic.
For the Best Director award ten points were awarded to winning votes, eight points for second, six points for third, four points for fourth and two points for fifth.
If you think that Nolan garnering two first places is more important than Fincher placing higher amongst the 5 voters then please let me know and I may reconsider.
