FILM HISTORY AS A LIST AWARDS 2011 – BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: MELISSA LEO

The fifty two year old actress easily wins the award with ten points. In this category 5 points were awarded for each winning vote with 3 points for a second placed vote and a solitary point for a third. Leo’s two number one spots on the lists of both Matt Joseph and Laurent Kelly was enough to see the actress comfortably prevail. In The Fighter Leo plays a hardened, controlling mother who is desperate for her son Mickey to achieve what her favoured son Dickey never managed to do in becoming a world boxing champion. Leo played the role perfectly as a tough but fragile mother with a particularly powerful scene featuring her crying alone in her car after discovering the truth about her crack addicted boy.

Leo made a name for herself in her role as a detective for full five series on the television show Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993-1997.  On the big screen she has continued to prosper with an inspiring work ethic that has seen her Oscar nominated twice in the last three years.  Having already taken home a number of significant acting awards this year she’ll be the favourite to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
